Europe cracks down on Russia's shadow fleet tankers
Original: schattenflotte
European action against Russia's so-called shadow fleet is intensifying. The French navy has cut a supply line of one of the tankers used by Moscow to evade sanctions and keep exporting oil, while reports detail how Europe is hunting Putin's tankers. EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas has warned that aging, poorly maintained vessels along European coasts pose a serious risk of an oil spill, adding urgency to the crackdown.
Why now: Recent French naval action and Kallas's oil-spill warning have put the Russian shadow fleet back at the center of European security debate.
