IFS warns UK budget will be 'work of fiction' without funding plan

The Institute for Fiscal Studies says the UK budget will amount to a 'work of fiction' unless the government sets out a clear plan to cover mounting spending pressures, including inflation-driven costs. The warning comes ahead of the 2026 budget and puts pressure on chancellor figures including John Healey to explain how gaps will be filled, whether through tax rises, borrowing or spending cuts.
Why now: Ahead of the 2026 UK budget, the respected think tank's blunt warning about unfunded spending pressures is drawing wide attention.
