New York's Rikers Island jail, long criticized for unsanitary and violent conditions, is set to miss the deadline set for closing the vast complex. Activists who pushed for its shutdown have expressed disappointment at the delay, renewing scrutiny of conditions inside the facility and the city's failure to meet its own timetable.
Why now: The deadline for closing the jail has passed unmet, disappointing activists and drawing fresh attention to conditions there.
