Valve is preparing official SteamOS support, including dual-boot and standalone installers, for rival AMD Z1 Extreme handhelds such as the ASUS ROG Ally X and Lenovo Legion Go. This would let those devices run Valve's Linux-based system with Proton instead of Windows 11, cutting out what many see as unnecessary Windows overhead. Gamers see it as a major step toward SteamOS becoming a real competitor to Windows on handheld gaming PCs.

Why now: Valve opening SteamOS to rival hardware is a significant shift in the handheld gaming PC market
