Russian Film Rewrites History of Mariupol Theater Bombing
Original: Russian Film Aims to Rewrite History of Deadly Theater Bombing in Ukraine
A new Russian film is presenting a version of events that contradicts established accounts of the 2022 bombing of a theater in Mariupol, Ukraine, where hundreds of civilians sheltering inside were killed. The film advances Moscow's claim that the strike was staged or carried out by Ukraine, dismissing extensive evidence that Russian forces bombed the building. Critics say the production is part of a broader effort to rewrite the historical record of the war.
Why now: The film's attempt to dispute well-documented war crimes has drawn criticism and renewed attention to the Mariupol theater attack.
