Atsushi Kataoka weighs in on Chunichi Dragons gum controversy
Original: 片岡篤史
Former Nippon-Ham star and commentator Atsushi Kataoka is drawing attention for his remarks on Chunichi Dragons players who chewed gum while greeting fans after their final game, an act widely criticized as disrespectful. Kataoka argued the players were only singled out because the team lost, saying it would likely have gone unmentioned had they won. His comments come as the Dragons also face scrutiny over mass releasing much of their 2023 draft class, with rival executives questioning the moves.
Why now: He offered a contrarian take on a controversial gesture by Chunichi players that is being hotly debated among Japanese baseball fans.
