Pope Leo XIV Condemns Death Penalty as U.S. Execution Goes Ahead
Original: Pope Leo XIV Condemns Death Penalty as U.S. Plans Livestreamed Execution
Pope Leo XIV has spoken out against the death penalty as the United States prepares to carry out a livestreamed execution. The pontiff reaffirmed the Catholic Church's opposition to capital punishment, and his intervention is drawing attention to the unusually public nature of the planned execution, with commentators debating the ethics of both the punishment and its broadcast.
Why now: The rare combination of a pope's condemnation and the unprecedented livestreaming of an execution has sparked widespread debate.
