UN refugee agency chief warns funding shortfall hits refugees worldwide
Original: UN refugee agency's funding shortfall is impacting refugees worldwide, its chief says
The head of the UN refugee agency, UNHCR, says a funding shortfall is affecting refugees around the world. The warning comes as humanitarian budgets shrink, leaving the agency struggling to meet the needs of a growing displaced population. Critics and aid groups warn that cuts to food, shelter and protection programmes could deepen crises in already vulnerable regions.
Why now: Donor funding has fallen short as global refugee numbers rise, prompting the agency's chief to publicly raise the alarm.
