Stop Calling Them Security Cameras, Security Expert Argues
Original: Stop Calling Them Security Cameras! Here is a learning moment: Cameras do not secure anything. They survey... Full Deets
A security professional is pushing back on the common phrase 'security cameras,' arguing that cameras do not actually secure anything — they only survey and record. The point, made in a blog post and shared among infosec communities, is that surveillance hardware alone deters or stops nothing; actual security requires people, processes and responses. The semantic distinction between surveillance and security is resonating with technology audiences.
Why now: Infosec communities enjoy debating precise terminology, and the argument that cameras survey rather than secure is a provocative reframing of everyday technology.
