Speaker Johnson walks back talk of leaving Congress
Original: Speaker Johnson walks back talk about potentially leaving Congress
House Speaker Mike Johnson has walked back earlier comments suggesting he might leave Congress. The Louisiana Republican had floated the possibility of stepping away from Capitol Hill, remarks that drew attention given his role leading a narrow House majority. He now says he intends to continue serving as Speaker and in Congress, easing concerns among fellow Republicans about a possible vacancy at the top of the chamber.
Why now: His departure would have created a major problem for a Republican majority already holding a slim margin.
