Sudan: Drought and war push Darfur and Kordofan towards famine
The UN is warning that Sudan's western regions of Darfur and Kordofan are sliding towards famine, as drought combines with the ongoing war between the army and the Rapid Support Forces to devastate food supplies. Blocked aid, destroyed agriculture and displaced populations have left millions facing severe hunger, and aid agencies say the window to prevent mass starvation is closing fast.
Why now: A new UN warning about imminent famine in Sudan amid drought and civil war is drawing international attention.
