US military archbishop: Catholic soldiers should not serve on firing squads
Original: Archbishop of the U.S. military says Catholic soldiers should not serve on firing squad
Archbishop Timothy Broglio, who leads the Archdiocese for the Military Services USA, has said Catholic soldiers should not be assigned to firing squad duties, citing Church teaching against direct participation in executions. The statement, reported by Catholic and mainstream outlets, comes as US states increasingly turn to firing squads as lethal injection drugs grow scarce.
Why now: Renewed US interest in execution by firing squad has prompted fresh guidance on military members' moral obligations.
