Aberfan disaster remembered decades on
Original: aberfan disaster
The 1966 Aberfan disaster, in which 144 people, mostly children, died when a coal tip collapsed onto a school in the Welsh village, is being remembered in renewed coverage. The Observer recounts how the rugby community rallied around Aberfan and honoured those lost, while Western Mail interviews describe ordinary people who gave and lost everything in a single day.
Why now: New anniversary coverage and retrospective features have put the Aberfan disaster back in public attention in the UK.
