French Navy Boards 'Shadow Fleet' Tanker in Indian Ocean
Original: French navy boards ‘shadow fleet’ ship in Indian Ocean: Macron
French President Emmanuel Macron announced that the French navy has boarded a ship from Russia's so-called 'shadow fleet' in the Indian Ocean. These vessels operate with unclear ownership and flags to evade sanctions on Russian oil. The interception signals a more assertive Western posture against sanctions-evasion shipping, and is drawing attention as European navies increasingly monitor such tankers far beyond European waters.
Why now: Europe is stepping up enforcement against Russia's sanctions-evading 'shadow fleet', and this boarding shows that reach extending into the Indian Ocean.
