Egyptian military cracks down on illegal gold mining in Eastern Desert
Original: Africa’s most powerful military launches crackdown on illegal prospecting of Eastern desert gold in a North African nation
Egypt's armed forces, widely regarded as Africa's most powerful military, have launched a crackdown on illegal gold prospecting in the country's Eastern Desert. The operation targets unlicensed miners extracting gold from the desert region, as authorities move to protect state-controlled mineral resources and bring informal mining under official regulation.
Why now: The army's direct involvement in enforcing mining law signals a tougher state stance on the lucrative and largely unregulated desert gold trade.
