Egyptian army moves against illegal gold mining as Sudan probes miner deaths
Original: Egyptian army says it is tackling illegal gold mining as Sudan probes miners’ deaths
Egypt's army says it is taking action against illegal gold mining, while Sudan investigates the deaths of a group of miners, according to reporting by Anadolu Agency. The two announcements came separately but touch the same contested cross-border gold trade along the Egypt-Sudan frontier, where unlicensed mining has flourished and caused repeated fatal accidents and disputes.
Why now: The reported miner deaths and the army's enforcement pledge have put the unregulated gold trade on the Egypt-Sudan border in the spotlight.
