Archbishop says Catholic soldiers should refuse firing squad duty

Original: Archbishop of the US military says Catholic soldiers should not serve on firing squad

The Archbishop for the US military has said Catholic soldiers should not take part in firing squad executions, arguing that taking a life in this way conflicts with church teaching. The intervention puts chaplains and Catholic service members in a difficult position and adds a religious voice to ongoing debates in the United States over capital punishment and the military's role in carrying out death sentences.

Why now: Renewed attention to executions and the military's role in them has prompted debate over religious objections to capital punishment.
