US military archbishop says Catholic soldiers should not join Hasan firing squad

Original: Archbishop of US military says Catholic soldiers should not serve on Hasan’s firing squad

The Archbishop for the US military has said Catholic soldiers should not take part in the firing squad assigned to execute Maj. Nidal Hasan, the former Army psychiatrist condemned for the 2009 Fort Hood shooting. The statement raises questions over whether troops can be exempted from the execution detail on grounds of conscience, drawing attention to religious liberty within the armed forces as the death penalty case moves forward.

Why now: The archbishop's public intervention in a high-profile pending military execution has reignited debate over conscience rights for Catholic service members.
