Belarus archbishop blesses AI-generated icon of Carlo Acutis
Original: Catholic archbishop in Belarus blesses AI-generated icon of Carlo Acutis, the Italian teenager known as the internet’s patron saint
A Catholic archbishop in Belarus has blessed an icon of Carlo Acutis created with artificial intelligence. Acutis, an Italian teenager who died in 2006 and was canonised in 2025, is known as the internet's patron saint. The blessing of a machine-made sacred image is drawing attention because it highlights the Catholic Church's uneasy embrace of new technology in religious practice.
Why now: The mix of AI-generated religious art and a saint associated with the internet sparks debate over technology's place in faith.
