US military archbishop urges Catholic soldiers to refuse firing squad role
Original: US military archbishop urges Catholic soldiers to refuse involvement in Army firing squad execution
The Archdiocese for the Military Services, the Catholic Church's US military archbishopric, has urged Catholic soldiers to refuse to take part in an upcoming US Army execution by firing squad. The appeal places Catholic service members in a direct conflict between military orders and Church teaching on the death penalty, and has drawn attention amid renewed debate over capital punishment in the United States.
Why now: The intervention highlights a rare public clash between military duty and religious conscience ahead of an Army firing squad execution.
