President puts national interests first, admits US disagreements
Original: President stresses national interests in diplomacy, acknowledges disagreements with US
South Korea's president said his country's diplomacy will be guided first by national interests, while openly acknowledging areas of disagreement with the United States. The remarks signal a more assertive stance in the alliance with Washington, balancing cooperation on security and trade with an insistence on pursuing Seoul's own priorities.
Why now: Tensions or negotiations in the US-South Korea alliance are making the leader's comments on independent diplomacy newsworthy.
