Images circulating online show black sewage water running down the steps of a ghat directly into the Ganges, while people bathe and pray in the river just below. The scenes have drawn strong reactions, with many commenters expressing alarm at the apparent lack of sanitation and public health safeguards at one of India's holiest sites.

Evidence

• Sewage flows directly into the Ganges. Black water comes down the ghat steps into the river. Right there, people bathe and pray. Doesn't look very hygienic to us, but that's what the video shows: sewage feeds the water where they bathe. · RadioGenoa · 2.3K
