Archbishop bars Catholics from Army firing squad duty
Original: Catholics in US Army must not participate in firing squad, prominent archbishop says
A prominent archbishop has stated that Catholics serving in the US Army must not take part in executions by firing squad, framing participation in such killings as incompatible with Catholic teaching on the sanctity of human life. The directive places Catholic soldiers potentially assigned to firing squad duty in conflict with military orders, raising questions about religious accommodation within the armed forces as firing squad executions have drawn renewed attention in some US states.
Why now: The archbishop's directive creates a direct clash between Catholic moral teaching and military orders at a time when firing squad executions are back in the news in the United States.
