Former Democratic Republic of Congo President Joseph Kabila has been named leader of a new rebel coalition, a striking turn for a man who ruled the country for nearly two decades. Observers say the development marks a significant shift in the region's conflict dynamics, raising questions about Kabila's political future and the stability of eastern DR Congo, where armed groups remain active and tensions with Rwanda persist.
Why now: A former head of state taking command of an armed rebellion is an extraordinary escalation in an already volatile conflict.
