Roman engineers used inverted siphons to move water uphill

Roman aqueducts mostly ran on gravity, but where routes crossed valleys or climbed slopes, engineers built inverted siphons. Water flowed down one side, and the resulting pressure pushed it back up through lead pipes and towers into a receiving tank. Where that was not practical, they also used Archimedes screws to lift water.

Why now: The ingenuity of ancient Roman hydraulic engineering still surprises and fascinates people online.
