Top US military archbishop tells Catholics to refuse firing squad duty
Original: Archbishop for U.S. military urges Catholics to recuse themselves from firing squad
The Archbishop for the U.S. Military Services has urged Catholic members of the armed forces to recuse themselves from serving on military firing squads, saying participation in executions conflicts with church teaching on the sanctity of life. The appeal comes as capital punishment remains in use in the United States and raises questions over conscientious objection within the military.
Why now: Renewed attention to executions in the United States has put the Catholic Church's stance on the death penalty and the role of Catholic service members back in the spotlight.
