Von der Leyen pledges funds to Egypt and Libya over Sudan migration
Original: Von der Leyen pledges more cash for Egypt and Libya regimes to keep Sudanese genocide victims out of Europe
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has pledged additional funding to Egypt and Libya aimed at preventing Sudanese fleeing the war from reaching Europe, EUobserver reports. The outlet characterises the move as paying the two regimes to keep Sudanese genocide victims out of the EU, a framing likely to fuel criticism of the bloc's migration policy.
Why now: The EU is expanding its migration-containment funding as the Sudan war drives displacement toward Europe, drawing criticism.
