Is Attention the Essence of Intelligence?

Original: Is 'Attention' the Essence of Intelligence?

Quanta Magazine has published a feature examining whether attention — the mechanism underpinning modern AI models like transformers — may be fundamental to intelligence itself, in machines and possibly in brains. The piece explores how attention lets systems weigh which information matters, and asks whether this single principle could explain cognition across neural networks and biological minds. Readers are debating whether attention is truly the core of intelligence or just one ingredient among many.

Why now: The article ties a hot neuroscience and AI question to the transformer architectures driving today's AI boom, sparking debate about what intelligence fundamentally is.
