Hungary lifts block, advancing Ukraine's EU membership talks
Original: Ukraine takes step forward in EU membership talks after Hungary drops objections
Ukraine has moved forward in its European Union accession negotiations after Hungary dropped its objections to advancing the process. Hungary had been the main holdout among EU member states, repeatedly blocking steps in Ukraine's membership path. With the obstacle removed, the talks can progress to the next stage, a significant development for Kyiv's bid to join the bloc amid the ongoing war with Russia.
Why now: Hungary had long been the sole EU holdout blocking Ukraine's accession talks, so its decision marks a notable diplomatic shift.
