Seabirds may be secret guardians of pristine coral reefs

Original: Some of the most pristine coral reefs have a secret weapon: birds

NPR reports that some of the world's most pristine coral reefs owe their health partly to birds. Seabirds nesting near reefs deposit nutrient-rich droppings that fertilize coral and boost fish populations, helping these ecosystems thrive where birds are present. The findings underline how protecting seabird colonies could strengthen reef resilience against warming oceans.

Why now: Interest in coral reef conservation is high amid ongoing ocean warming and bleaching concerns.
