1986 Gorilla Rescue Recalled After Tiger Tragedy
Original: 1986 Gorilla Protects Boy, Contrasts Recent Tiger Tragedy
The 1986 incident in which a gorilla at Jersey Zoo protected a fallen young boy, Levan Merritt, is being widely shared as a counterpoint to a recent fatal tiger incident. Commenters highlight how the gorilla stayed near and seemed to guard the unconscious child until keepers intervened, contrasting that calm behaviour with the deadly tiger attack. The comparison has revived debate about how great apes and big cats react to humans in their enclosures.
Why now: A recent tiger tragedy prompted people to resurface the famous 1986 gorilla rescue as a striking contrast.
