Jambo the Gorilla Who Shielded a Fallen Boy Remembered
Original: Jambo the Gorilla Shields Boy After 1986 Zoo Fall
The 1986 incident at Jersey Zoo is drawing fresh attention: when five-year-old Levan Merritt fell into the gorilla enclosure, silverback Jambo stood guard over the unconscious boy and appeared to calm the other gorillas until rescuers reached him. The story, captured on video, is widely retold as a defining example of an animal showing unexpected gentleness toward a human child.
Why now: People keep sharing the decades-old footage as a striking example of compassion from a wild animal.
