Tarpit honeypot logs 46,000 requests in 24 hours
Original: 📡 24 hours of MIRE/C³ ↗ 46'020 requests from 4'585 unique IPs 📦 Attacker bandwidth cost: 216.3 MB ⏱ Attacker time burned
A cybersecurity honeypot known as MIRE/C³ reported 46,020 requests from 4,585 unique IP addresses over 24 hours. The operator says the tarpit slowed attackers to an average crawl, burning an estimated 873 hours of their time for just 216 MB of bandwidth, and harvested 107 live canary tokens used to track attackers. Twelve canaries were put to use within minutes of harvest, with 80% traced back to scanners.
Why now: Security researchers find tarpit and canary-token tactics an effective, low-cost way to waste attacker resources and are sharing the measurable results.
