European Commission is facing criticism from climate advocates who accuse it of taking a step backward on climate policy by giving in to pressure from the oil industry lobby. Critics say the EU executive is diluting its climate commitments, calling the move another retreat on environmental ambitions. The accusations are spreading among climate-focused commentators online, who are voicing frustration with what they see as the Commission bowing to Big Oil interests rather than defending the European Green Deal agenda.
Why now: The European Commission is perceived to have weakened its climate policy under oil industry lobbying, prompting backlash.
