Black skimmer catches fish by skimming water mid-flight
Original: De Amerikaanse of zwarte Schaarbek (Rynchops niger) vangt visjes door zijn langere ondersnavel al vliegend door het wate
The black skimmer (Rynchops niger) hunts in a remarkable way: it flies low over the water with its longer lower bill open, dragging it through the surface. When the bill touches a small fish, the upper bill snaps shut in an instant. Bird enthusiasts are sharing photos and descriptions of this striking feeding technique.
Why now: Wildlife photographers and bird lovers are sharing striking images of the skimmer's unusual feeding behaviour.
