U.S. World War II veterans fading from living memory
Original: U.S. World War II veterans are fading from living memory
The last American veterans of World War II are passing away, and with them the firsthand memory of the conflict. Analysis of their declining numbers highlights how the war is shifting from lived experience to history, as the generation that served in the 1940s is now almost entirely gone.
Why now: The shrinking number of surviving WWII veterans is prompting reflection on the loss of living firsthand memory of the war.
