Researchers hunting for the wreckage of Amelia Earhart's plane near a remote Pacific island face an unexpected obstacle: giant, meat-eating coconut crabs. The crabs are said to be so oppressive that expedition members would not be able to sleep on the island where the aircraft is believed to have gone down in 1937, complicating plans to survey the site.

Why now: A new expedition to locate Earhart's long-lost plane is drawing attention, and the strange crab problem makes the story viral.
