Sea Watch rescues 227 migrants, seeks nearby port
Original: gommone
The rescue ship Sea Watch has taken aboard 227 migrants from an inflatable boat in the Mediterranean and is asking Italian authorities to assign a nearby port for disembarkation. The closest port being offered, Civitavecchia, is said to be three days' sailing away, renewing debate over Italy's port designation rules for migrant rescues.
Why now: The long distance to the assigned port is reigniting the recurring dispute over where rescue ships may dock in Italy.
