Freeland says Lutnick threatened Canada in trade talks
Original: Freeland says Lutnick threatened Canada
Former Canadian deputy prime minister Chrystia Freeland says US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick threatened Canada during trade negotiations. Her claim has drawn attention to the aggressive tactics used by the Trump administration in dealings with its northern neighbour, and is fuelling debate in Canada about how to respond to American pressure on trade and tariffs.
Why now: Tensions over US-Canada trade talks are escalating, and a senior Canadian figure accusing a US cabinet member of threats is striking a nerve.
