China Sanctions Paraguay and Belize Ministers Over Taiwan Ties
Original: China Sanctions Ministers from Paraguay and Belize over Taiwan Diplomacy; Paraguayan Minister Cal...
China has imposed sanctions on government ministers from Paraguay and Belize over their countries' diplomatic relations with Taiwan, according to the headline being circulated. Paraguay's foreign minister responded critically to the Chinese move. Paraguay and Belize are among the small number of states that maintain formal ties with Taipei rather than Beijing, and China regularly retaliates against officials from governments it sees as endorsing Taiwanese sovereignty.
Why now: China's punitive measures against two Latin American and Caribbean governments highlight ongoing tensions over Taiwan's international recognition.
