Original: Approximately 500 participate in hunger strike at Folkston immigration detention center - The Current https:// thecurren

Roughly 500 people detained at the Folkston ICE Processing Center, a privately operated immigration detention facility in Georgia, have begun a hunger strike to protest conditions and their detention. The protest is drawing attention from immigrant rights advocates and civil liberties groups, who are calling for oversight of the facility, while attention is turning to detention conditions and private prison operators in the region.

Why now: A large-scale hunger strike at a major ICE detention facility raises urgent concerns about immigrant detention conditions and oversight.
