Fresno bishop vows church support after ICE detains parishioners
Original: Fresno bishop vows church support as ICE detains Catholic parishioners
The Catholic bishop of Fresno has pledged the church's support for parishioners detained by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The vow follows detentions of members of local Catholic communities in the Fresno area, and the bishop said the diocese stands with affected families. The story is drawing attention amid ongoing national debate over immigration enforcement and the role of churches in protecting congregants.
Why now: Immigration enforcement actions touching houses of worship are a live national controversy, and a bishop publicly backing detained parishioners is a notable response.
