A Przewalski's horse foal has been born in the wild in Kazakhstan for the first time in roughly 200 years. The birth is being welcomed as a significant milestone in reintroduction efforts for the species, which was once extinct in the wild and is now being returned to the steppe landscapes where it historically roamed. Conservationists see it as an encouraging sign the programme is taking hold.
Why now: The foal marks a rare conservation success and a first wild birth of the species in Kazakhstan in about two centuries.
