Google quietly links Android phone numbers to accounts
Original: Google quietly enabled an opt-out Android feature ("Verify phone numbers automatically") that links your phone number to
Google has reportedly switched on an Android feature called 'Verify phone numbers automatically' by default, associating users' phone numbers with every Google account signed in on a device, including work and secondary profiles. Users can turn it off, but disabling it only prevents future verification checks and does not unlink numbers already associated. Privacy-minded users are criticizing the opt-out rather than opt-in approach.
Why now: People are concerned about a default-on privacy change that links phone numbers to accounts without explicit consent and cannot fully be undone.
