Gaza sewage floods Mediterranean as reconstruction blocked
Original: Gaza's raw sewage floods Mediterranean Sea as Israel restricts reconstruction
Raw sewage from Gaza is flowing into the Mediterranean Sea because infrastructure for treating wastewater cannot be rebuilt while Israel restricts the entry of reconstruction materials. Reports say damaged treatment plants and pipes remain unrepaired, pushing untreated waste toward the coast and raising environmental and public health concerns for Gaza and neighbouring waters.
Why now: Israeli restrictions on rebuilding materials are preventing repairs to Gaza's destroyed wastewater infrastructure, causing an ongoing pollution crisis.
