Gardeners urged to ditch peat moss over environmental cost

Gardeners are being reminded that harvesting peat moss damages carbon-rich peatlands, and that composted materials work as an easy substitute. A gardening discussion drew attention to the issue, with one gardener saying they had not realised the impact and would stop buying bagged peat moss going forward.
Why now: Growing awareness of peatland harvesting's climate impact is prompting home gardeners to seek peat-free alternatives.
Evidence
- The one big lesson for me this morning - I won't be buying any bags of Peat Moss going forward. I didn't fully understand the impact and with a little more effort it can easily be replaced by using composted materials. # Gardening · PaulBusch@cosocial.ca · 23
