GOP hawks demand retaliation against Chinese shipping giant over spying fears
Original: Fears of China spying on US military prompt GOP hawks to demand retaliation against the shipping giant
Republican hawks in Congress are calling for retaliation against COSCO, China's state-owned shipping giant, amid fears the company could be used to spy on US military operations. Lawmakers point to concerns that Chinese-controlled port infrastructure and shipping logistics near US bases could give Beijing intelligence access, and are urging punitive measures against the company.
Why now: Rising US-China tensions have put Chinese state-linked companies operating near American military facilities under renewed scrutiny.
