Yokohama High School right-handed pitcher Shoki Oda, whose fastball reaches 157 km/h, is reportedly set to pursue a career in Major League Baseball without being recruited by any NPB team, an unprecedented path for a top draft prospect. The right-hander has represented Japan at the U18 level and was seen as a potential first-round pick in the 2026 NPB draft. Japanese baseball fans are debating what his move means for the domestic draft system.
Why now: A top Japanese high school pitching prospect skipping NPB entirely for MLB is unprecedented and challenges the traditional draft pathway.
