China's Honghu T70, a fully electric, driverless tractor developed domestically, is drawing wide attention as the country confronts an aging rural workforce and persistent farm labor shortages. Observers say autonomous machinery could reshape Chinese agriculture, reducing dependence on manual labor as younger workers leave the countryside. The machine's field performance has fueled debate about how quickly automation can spread across China's farmland.

Why now: China's rural labor shortage makes a working autonomous tractor a striking sign of how farming there may change.
