Pope urges humanitarian ceasefire in Oleshky in call with Putin
Original: Pope urges humanitarian ceasefire in Oleshky in call with Russian President
Pope Francis has called for a humanitarian ceasefire in Oleshky, a city in Ukraine's Russian-occupied Kherson region, during a phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The appeal highlights ongoing concern for civilians in occupied areas of southern Ukraine, where fighting and hardship continue. The Vatican has repeatedly pushed for de-escalation and negotiated peace since Russia's full-scale invasion began.
Why now: The Pope's direct appeal to Putin over a specific occupied Ukrainian city is a rare and notable diplomatic intervention in the war.
